Taking a photograph in the daytime is easy as you have the natural light to illuminate whatever it is you are taking a picture of, at night however you need an artificial light source which is provided by the camera’s flash. The flash lights up objects making them visible on the photograph. Now this is the important part, the flash light reflects off objects, we only see them because of the light reflecting off them…. Hold that thought for a moment while you read the next paragraph.
When it comes to ghosts, the opinions of believers and sceptics varies greatly, but what most people are willing to believe is that ghosts or spirits, should they exist, would be a form of energy, you can’t touch a ghost and they can allegedly walk through walls therefore they can’t be physical matter and must instead be energy. Many people refer to Orbs as energies which brings me back to what I was saying about the camera flash, if a spirit is present in the form of an Orb than why would you need a camera flash to be able to see it? Surely something made of pure energy would be self-illuminating like a light bulb. One thing which is certain is that you can not reflect light off light itself; you can only reflect light off something which has a surface to reflect from. In fact if you use the flash to take pictures of ghosts than you are even less likely to capture a Ghost or Orb than you would be if you left the flash off as the camera’s flash would more than likely bleach out any Ghosts or Orbs which were present, in exactly the same way that a weak torch light which is normally visible in darkness becomes completely invisible in the daylight.
The basic logic, in summary, means that anything which appears in a picture where the flash was used must have a solid surface and therefore must be physical matter, in other words the Orbs captured in these photographs are not Ghosts or Spirits but instead are airborne particles, usually water and dust.
This principal is demonstrated in the pictures below. The image on the left was taken with water sprayed in front of the lens which is made visible by the camera’s flash. The image to the right was also taken with water sprayed in front of the lens except this time the flash was left off. The result is that the water droplets are not picked up by the camera.
Orbs have been the subject of debate between paranormal investigators, enthusiasts and sceptics for over 100 years now. The image to the left was taken in 1907 at the Zoological Gardens of Basle in Switzerland and appears to show a ball of light hovering in front of the camera lens. It has baffled scientists and is the earliest known photograph of a spirit light or “Orb”.
The question is quite simply, what exactly is this Orb? Is it a spirit light? The early manifestation of a ghost? or is it just water or dust molecules caught in the camera’s flash? Whilst this particular photo is simply too old to be able to explain either way, I hope that this article will help you to understand how you can identify if an Orb really is an “Orb” in your own photographs.
The first thing we need to understand is the basic principles of light and vision. Take a look around the room you are in, everything that you can see is only visible because of light reflecting off it and into your eyes. If there was no light at all you would see nothing. The light source will usually either be natural light, which is from the Sun (or the Sun’s light reflecting off The Moon) or the light will come from an artificial source such as a light bulb.
So we now know that Orbs captured when the camera’s flash is turned on are not ghosts or spirits, but the story doesn’t end here. It is still possible to catch an Orb on camera, but for it to have any chance of being a true Orb it must have been captured with no flash used. So far I haven’t been able to find a picture of an Orb where proof has been provided that no flash was used, I have been sent a grainy dark image where an orb like object is partially visible, this is however inconclusive so the search continues.
I hope that you have found this article interesting, my message is to keep hunting and keep taking those pictures but if you want to capture any form of Ghost, Spirit or Orb than leave the flash turned off.
