Nicky 2011

The Year Is On! By Nicky Marshall

So the calendar clicks across to 1.1.2012 with one last rendition of Auld Lang Syne and one too many glasses of bubbly. The additional girth on your waistline is a little too obvious and quite frankly you feel well and truly toxic from all the yummy yet far too rich food that it was so easy to consume.

Over the course of the day you ponder over how large the credit card bill will be and how little salary there appears to be and how much month. There's nothing on the telly, your head hurts and somehow you feel you should write down your resolutions...the thought of which brings on the nausea...

Sound familiar?

Ok, so maybe that's a little too dramatic and life may not throw you all of those things at once, but in January we do feel the pressure of making this year different, making it count. We mostly try to give ourselves a goal or an aim, but usually the pressure is too great or the job too big and we end up feeling worse than when we started!

So how do you bring in a new year in a positive way without the pressure? How can you focus your attention while keeping the fun and mystery of life?

In my 41 years I have had many aims and goals, many wishes and dreams and many catastrophic moments when plans went horribly wrong.

In my younger years I have had so great an aim or wish that I have cast a spell for myself. I have also had to live with the consequences as the realisation hits that maybe I got my wording wrong and perhaps the floods of tears/blowing lightbulbs/flooding washing machines are the least of my worries!

One thing I have learned is that while I have had happy endings, successes and many miracles, they have never come about in the way that I had planned. Perhaps I can suggest a less painful action plan:

Step One: Do Something!

Take a good, hard, non-judgemental look at yourself and decide what needs to change. Note I used the word 'yourself'. If you start by judging others you are on a hiding to nothing...you can only change you. Get to the absolute truth of what you would like to change...it may start out as money and boil down to freedom, so be honest and open without worrying about how to change it.

Step Two: Think Something!

If you had a magic wand and there were no limiting factors/ trust issues/other people what would you like to happen. How would you like to feel? How much happier/ less stressed would you be if you got your wish? Visualise a smiling, happy, healthy you.

Step Three: Be Something!

Your last job is to immediately act as if everything is better and you are the changed person. Those around you may think you have lost the plot but don't worry, just carry on your life with a happy smile and talk as if everything is exactly as it should be...which of course it is!

With this approach the pressure is off, life can be fun and your creative side gets to play. The added fun is to check back after a few months and see the unusual and miraculous ways that your dreams have manifested.

Wishing you a happy and fun-filled 2012!
