This month’s article is written by Michael Treanor as he tells us about his work in animal communication...
One part of my job which I absolutely adore is my work with animals. I work with children and young adults as part of an NVQ animal care course and I teach them how to empathise with the animals, but I also work with many horse owners who want to communicate more effectively with their horses.
Everything in nature (including horses) consists of a complex system of energies. Horses have a very finely tuned energy which is affected by other animals, the earth itself and of course, their human companions. I always liken horses to young children and there are certainly comparisons to be drawn between horses and people who Aspergers or Autism. Horses think very literally and they like their routines and familiarity. Any change in routine can affect the horse adversely, as we will see in one of the case studies below. The horse is also in tune with the weather, the tides, the seasons and stars and he has the ability to tune into the fine energy of the earth’s magnetic field – something which we humans have almost completely forgotten how to do. There is a growing number of professionals, including riders, trainer, vets and managers, who are now encouraging an holistic approach to equestrian care, and who are coming to respect the work of the Horse Whisperer.
I have set out some case studies which may give you an insight into how the horses’ mind works.
Case 1
I was called out to see a blind horse, who had started to act out of character, rearing up and generally being aggressive. I went along to the stable and as usual, I went directly to the horse – I like to diagnose any illnesses or past problems and speak to the horse before speaking with the owners. That way, I have no pre-conceived ideas about the horse’s problem.
The horse told me that he was upset because they had not fed him in the morning. This had upset him so much, he had become fearful and aggressive. He was used to his routine and it had been disrupted.
I relayed what the horse had said to the owner – she said she was not aware of any feeding time changes, but she would speak with the grooms and other people who cared for the horses. She called a young girl into the room who was responsible for feeds and she told us that she normally brought the horses inside in the morning to feed them – but as it was such a cold night she had brought them in the night before and fed them then! This had
really confused the horse - maybe because he was blind and his other sensitivities were heightened?
I went back out to the horse and explained what had happened and that the girl had actually been acting in what she thought were his best interests. He said he understood and he was happy to be settled back into his routine, with no further aggression issues.
Case 2
I was called out to see a horse who had lost his appetite and was very depressed. He has lost interest in everything and his owners couldn’t understand why.
As I approached the stable I looked into his eyes and felt his pain. He was very upset. I tuned in and asked him what was wrong.
‘I don’t have long left to live’ he said. I asked how he could possibly know this, and he said the owners had told him.
I went and spoke to the owner and she looked shame-faced.
As a joke, I often say to him “if you don’t start winning me prizes Mister, you’re for the knackers yard” – I didn’t realise he would take it literally!
Once I had explained to him that his owner loved him (a horse wouldn’t understand the term ‘joke’) and that he was in no danger, he bucked up no end, and became his usual happy self again!
