In our travels researching claims of paranormal activity, we often here people talking about somewhere being ‘haunted’. I just want to take a look at this word and see what it really means? According to many, a haunted house or property is ‘a place often perceived as being inhabited by disembodied spirits of the deceased who may have been former residents or were familiar with the property’.
OK that’s fair enough but here’s my problem with it. If indeed activity or even apparitions have been seen at a certain location, shouldn’t it be everywhere? I’m sure people have been with a good medium (whether you believe in this ability or not) and they’ve picked up on things at the most obscure of places. You often here of psychics also talking about ‘energies’ and the like and indeed, if there is another plain of existence beyond this one that bleeds into our reality, then surely that bleed could be anywhere? There are many accounts of everyday people going about there business of witnessing a ‘ghost’ in broad daylight and these aren’t at some historic Manor House or Castle. But its these locations that are more closely associated with having its resident ‘spirit’ and being a traditionally ‘haunted house’ but why is this?
Some attribute this to the ‘stone tape theory’ where energy (that word again!) is somehow recorded into the fabric of the masonry of the building, to be played out at certain times when the conditions are right. The hypothesis behind this theory was proposed in the 1970’s but analyse it for more than a minute and it doesn’t hold up too much scrutiny. Yes it’s fair to say that an old property may have much residual imprints from occupation over the years but so do modern houses with modern ghosts!
The idea of a disembodied spirits roaming around and frightening its (most likely) unintended victims a bit, well, medieval I’m afraid. I find it hard to fathom in the 21st Century with all our advances in science, reason and understanding that a ‘spirit’ (if indeed, they of course exist!) would have nothing better to do than scare folk! If these beings were intelligent and literate in this life, wouldn’t they be in whatever is allegedly next? Maybe they just pop back to visit (much like looking at an old family photo album) and have a wander at old memories but if true, this could happen anywhere surely.
So here’s a little challenge for all the investigators out there – find a location that’s has no activity reported and do a few experiments or vigils and see what you may get? If it’s everywhere then you may strike lucky. Then again you may not!
