Many of my books contain stories about our animal angels both on this side of life and the other. Pet's too can be our lifesavers and life-changers. Sadly, lots of people write to tell me about their grief after losing a beloved pet. That grief can be as strong as when losing a human love.
I believe it's important to mark that loss in the same way we might our human loved ones. Funeral's serve a purpose of closure and we need to do something similar with our pets to help with the grieving process. You can do this at the time of the loss or many years later, it doesn't matter.
1. Flower tribute. I took my old dog basket and planted it up with flowers and placed it in the garden. I've recently given it a new lease of life by painting it a lovely sage colour. It looks beautiful filled with herbs and scented plants and every time I look at it, it reminds me of my late pet.
2. Make a memorial book. Gather together old photographs of a beloved pet or cut out pictures from pet magazines of animals or cartoons which remind you of your lost love. Write poems, or collect together favourite memories of your pet. You can even photograph their old toys or take pictures of the special places you used to go together. When you've finished, tie a pretty ribbon around your memory book and keep it somewhere safe.
After pet's pass over they are just as likely as human souls to visit us on this side of life. Susan often felt her dog's waggy tail against her leg after he passed over and Josie would sometimes wake up to the familiar padding of her cat on the bed as he continued to make a comfy 'nest' of the bedclothes...even after he passed away.
When Joe had a near death experience he was comforted to see his old granddad waiting for him with the family Labrador. Granddad told him to wait in heaven for a short while, whist the doctors were working on his body as it lay on the operating table below. Joe felt comforted by the presence of the old family dog whist he was in his spirit form and thankfully, the young boy went on to make a full recovery.
Remember, just like your human friends and relations to treasure the special time you have with your pets today, because pets are angels too!
