Garnet

In this article I will be looking at the Almandine Garnet which is red in colour.

The almandine garnet, sometimes incorrectly called almandite, is the modern gem known as carbuncle (though originally almost any red gemstone was known by this name). The term "carbuncle" is derived from the Latin meaning "live coal". Chemically, almandine is an iron-aluminium garnet with the formula Fe3Al2(SiO4)3; the deep red transparent stones are often called precious garnet and are used as gemstones (being the most common of the gem garnets).

History

Red has always symbolised blood. Blood is seen as life-force, and vitality. Garnets have been mined for thousands of years and have long been carried by travellers to protect against accidents far from home. In legend, garnets light up the night and protect their owners from nightmares. In mythology Noah use a garnet lantern to navigate the Ark at night. The ancient world is full of praise for the carbuncle, the glowing red coal of a gemstone we now know as garnet. Garnet jewellery was buried with Norseman to light the passage to Valhalla. The Crusaders set garnets into their armour, believing their power would keep them safe. During the middle ages garnet was also thought to draw out negativity, ward off harm and increase well-being, honesty and loyalty.

Angel:  Archangel Uriel

Birthstone: Garnet is the birthstone for those born in January.

Physical:  Fiery, warming energy which swiftly ameliorates cold, damp disease states and sluggish conditions.

Emotional:  Almandine garnet eases panic, worry and fear. It reduces survival issues and restores the will to live life to the full.

Mentally:  Garnets have always been a symbol of faith, truth and light. They removes inertia, procrastination and lethargy.

Psychologically:  It has always been a warrior's stone - set into shields and sword hilts to give protection in battle. It is known as the stone of health and life force.

Spiritual:  Garnet assists us in finding joy, feeling supported and being able to give and receive love.

Magic:  Provides, strength, fortitude, courage, stamina and when suitably directed Kundalini activation.

Meditation:  Garnets hold a magical key to the Spirit Kingdom of the animals. Meditating with the powerful earthy energies whilst holding a garnet crystal will activate your passage of power into the 'totem' animal energy or consciousness, where you will find your own animal 'Guardian Angel'; this will be an energy that is wholly trustworthy, completely sincere and reliable. Crystal Placement:  Root chakra (muladhara) - element of earth - balanced expression as grounded, stable and reliable. The symptoms of an unbalanced root chakra are - when it is too closed, deformed or blocked: emotionally needy, low self-esteem, self-destructive behaviour, fearful. The symptoms of an over-active root chakra are: bullying, over-materialistic, self-centred, engaging in physical foolhardiness. In our present materialistic society we plunder the earth, giving no thought to our children and grandchildren and their future. Garnet teaches you to care for the planet and accept your Divine birthright as custodian of the earth and guardian of peace.

Healing Placement:  Root chakra. Because red garnets are so powerful and energising, they should be used for only short periods.

Cleansing:  Hold the crystal under running water for several minutes and visualise imbalances flowing away. Then put in the sunlight to dry.
